What’s the occasion for the party? Divorce, of course

by Tanis McGonegal Family Law

On behalf of Cooper & Tanis, P.C. posted in divorce on Thursday, June 25, 2015.

Divorce is viewed very differently these days than it was a half-century ago. Although most still regard it as a difficult and unfortunate situation, the stigma associated with divorce has largely gone away.

As a nation, we have even started adding rituals to the divorce process. In the past decade or so, divorce parties have become a common practice. In today’s post, we’ll discuss some reasons why many divorcees choose to have one.

Divorce is a difficult life transition that comes with stress, grief, anger and sadness. But it is nonetheless a transition. After surviving the process and finalizing divorce, you may want to celebrate the end of one era and mark the beginning of a new one. Post-divorce life often brings numerous opportunities for growth and personal fulfillment.

Having a party can also be a great way to reconnect socially. Social reasons to throw a divorce party could include:

  • Thanking loved ones who have supported you through the divorce
  • Announcing your divorce to a gathered group rather than needing to have dozens of smaller conversations
  • Reminding yourself that you still know how to have a good time
  • Showing others that you are single and may be ready to start dating again

Like weddings, divorce parties can be big or small, lavish or simple, high-energy or low-key. Some divorcees choose to have large gatherings with party favors and themed cakes while others just want a night out with friends.

When your divorce is finalized, will you decide to celebrate with a divorce party?
